Socially Responsible Investing – Growth & Impact
Cliff Feigenbaum and Ted Ketcham

Just before we went to press with this issue the Social Investment Forum released the "2005 Report on Socially Responsible Investing in the US," which shares the impressive news that socially responsible investing (SRI) assets in the U.S. have now reached $2.29 trillion.

The report not only outlines this exciting financial growth, but also the impact SRI is having in people's lives.

Speaking of growth, several additional SRI mutual funds came out in the last year, including three from Parnassus, a new European-focused fund from Domini, as well as three new Asset Allocation funds from Calvert. See our mutual fund performance chart inside for more information ( the Chart is in the Print Version Only ).

With this growth the media SRI attention has also expanded. Of the hundreds of articles written about investing with a conscience, two stood out. For the first time both Journal of Investing and Registered Rep magazines did large cover stories on SRI. Recently Time magazine in their December 19 issue featured an article on SRI Funds, and SmartMoney magazine's February 2006 issue proclaimed the Ariel Appreciation fund, managed by John Rodgers, as "one of the seven funds to buy now."

2005 saw an increasing number of conferences worldwide organized around the themes of SRI and corporate social responsibility (CSR). This trend continues in 2006 with events in Canada, Asia, US, Europe and the UK. Keep up to date with our global Calendar of SRI and CSR events in each issue as well as in the expanded version online.

This issue also includes an exclusive interview with SRI leader Amy Domini, as well as a look at how Shorebank Pacific's new EcoCash accounts lead to fuel savings and cleaner air in the Pacific Northwest. Also see the profile on the More Than Money organization, and plenty of SRI industry news, including the Calvert Foundation's "Social Capitalist" award for 2006 from Fast Company magazine.

Save some online time for www.greenmoney.com where you'll find another great selection of articles, including an overview of her new “Megatrends 2010” book by author Patricia Aburdene. We commend her for identifying SRI as a MegaTrend and also appreciate her mentioning GreenMoney Journal. Online too is Marc Lane, author of “Profitable Socially Responsible Investing? An Institutional Investors Guide, ” as well as a thought-provoking study on the "Future of SRI" done by Coro Strandberg.

In the next SRI issue (Fall 2006) we'll cover the latest in Community Investing, Shareholder Resolutions and Advocacy, International SRI mutual funds, as well as SRI resources and fall events. Make sure you receive that, as well as our summer "Sustainable Business" issue by taking advantage of our special 2-subscriptions-for-the-price-of-1 offer. Megatrends for Business
My book Megatrends 2010 (published by Hampton Roads in the Fall of 2005) depicts the dawn of Conscious Capitalism, a self-organizing movement of investors, consumers, activists, visionary companies and ordinary managers to restore ethics, Spirit and accountability to business. I believe Conscious Capitalism is greatest business megatrend of our time. But before describing it, let me explain why I think it's emerging today.

Corporate Social Responsibility (reflections on the 2005 Business for Social Responsibility Conference)
When asked by the editor of this publication to report on a recent national BSR conference on Corporate Social Responsibility, I was curious what changes I would find.
