Socially Responsible Investing – Better Companies, Better Communities

The GreenMoney Journal's 10th Anniversary: Optimism for the next 10 years
CLIFF FEIGENBAUM

The pace toward a more transparent world is quickening. In corporate boardrooms, the White House, and even the church our leaders are finding their big and little secrets getting harder to keep; worldwide scrutiny is revealing their flaws. The good news is that we have the tools AND an unprecedented opportunity to re-design our world so that it works for
everyone, and so that it lasts as it was designed to. We can have a planet in which first world prosperity doesn’t require third world poverty, nor does technological “convenience” have to come at the expense of environmental sustainability.

The tools for change, which require neither bloodshed nor social upheaval, are available to anyone who participates in an economy. They are awareness and choice. Does solving complex problems with these basic notions seem simplistic, not to mention unreasonably optimistic? Consider the growth of Socially Responsible Investing (SRI), shareholder activism, and community banking. Just in GreenMoney’s ten-year history they have produced over two trillion investment dollars worth of evidence to the contrary.

So this issue is about progress in its most benevolent form. GreenMoney Journal’s ten-year mission has been to promote the win-win solution of teaching people to use their knowledge and their dollars to invest in positive corporate practices. We’ve also helped companies to behave responsibly, not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because good social and environmental sense are absolutely consistent with good business sense. We’ve enthusiastically advanced the cause of the “Triple Bottom Line” of People, Planet and Profits. The balance of these three means that financial performance and corporate conscience can be mutually enhancing.

We’ve asked our contributors to predict the ten-year future of SRI, sustainable business and related issues. Their responses, optimistic, though not unrealistic, are based on the past ten years. Thus, they predict proportionate growth in the SRI sector for the decade to come.

Here in print and at- www.greenmoney.com, you’ll find a combined collection of 23 articles projecting the futures of such socially responsible topics as eco-travel, green business, natural foods, and more. Of course, we especially cover the different aspects of socially responsible investing: screening, shareholder activism, and community investing. Writers include Amy Domini, William McDonough, Barbara Krumsiek, Nina Utne, and Gary Hirshberg.

At greenmoney.com (now seven years old itself), find another collection of articles from such experts as Steve Schueth, Susan Davis, Alex Kochkin, Anita Green, and Randy Hayes. Enjoy reading these and please, let us know what you think and what YOUR predictions are.

William McDonough and Michael Braungart declare in their article, “By 2012 we hope to see world in which all children are nourished with fresh healthy food, affordable health care, and generous prosperity that honors the laws of nature.” In 2012, will we wonder what took us so long?

The combination of a successful decade behind and a very hopeful one ahead has already sped up our pace and impact at GreenMoney. One recent day this all happened: in the morning was a new book discussion with Bloomberg Press; it was followed by an interview on SRI with USA Today; and that was followed by another with a student from the Columbia School of Journalism. Our email included a contact from Scotland from a student working on SRI for a masters project, a request from a new library in Pakistan for a copy of GreenMoney Journal and another message from a financial analyst in India looking for information on SRI.

As we become increasingly effective in the next ten years, GreenMoney will continue to serve as a voice to those wanting to know more about the two trillion-dollar world of SRI and sustainable business. We definitely share the rich enthusiasm of our contributors. Amy Domini states in her article, “SRI stands on the cusp of enormous growth. The next ten years will bring widespread, even universal, acceptance of the social investment industry’s credibility and impact.”

So, welcome to the cusp. Pretty exciting, isn't it?
Before we go to 2012, here is a note on our next issue (Aug./Sept.). GreenMoney journeys around the world with further reports on SRI from Asia, Canada and Australia. We'll also take a closer look at shareholder activism in 2002.

Don't miss it. Subscription information on the home page of this web site.
